For years, I wanted a better way to hold odd-shaped and complex parts in a milling vise.

The traditional answer was usually the same: machine a set of soft jaws.

Soft jaws work great, but sometimes you only need to hold a strange part once. By the time you find a set of jaws, install them, machine the profile, do the job, and remove them again, you’ve invested a lot of time into workholding that may never be used again.

I kept thinking:

There has to be a better way.

That idea eventually became Topper Machine LLC Pin Jaws.

Instead of machining a new pocket every time an unusual part lands on the mill, Pin Jaws use removable hardened pins that can be positioned in different holes to accommodate a huge variety of irregular and complex shapes.

Move the pins. Clamp the part. Get to work.

And when the next weird job shows up?

Reconfigure them and do it again.

BUILT LIKE MACHINE-TOOL WORKHOLDING SHOULD BE

These aren’t lightweight accessories or imported jaws with our name stamped on them.

Each set of 6" Pin Jaws is made in small batches here in Northern Wisconsin from solid 4140 prehardened steel.

The jaws are machined, finished, inspected, and tumbled to produce a clean, professional finish while still being built first and foremost as a serious piece of shop tooling.

The jaw material is approximately Rockwell C 28-32, giving you durable workholding designed for years of shop use.

And when you aren’t using the pins?

Leave the Pin Jaws on the vise.

They can also serve as your regular hard jaws, eliminating the need to constantly switch back and forth between dedicated jaw sets.

The real advantage of Pin Jaws is flexibility.

By repositioning the hardened pins, you can adapt the jaws to parts that would normally be difficult, inconvenient, or time-consuming to hold with conventional flat vise jaws.

Every set includes six hardened and ground, 1-inch-long pins. The pins are approximately Rockwell C 60 and are manufactured in the USA.

Additional pins are available separately if you’d like even more setup flexibility.

These 6" Pin Jaws use 3.875" bolt spacing and are designed to fit compatible vises from Kurt, Haas, TE-CO, TMX, and other manufacturers using the same mounting pattern.

Please verify the bolt spacing on your vise before ordering.

Pin Jaws weren’t dreamed up in a marketing department. They came from standing in front of a milling machine and thinking there had to be a faster, simpler way to hold the strange parts that inevitably show up in a machine shop.

They’re made the way I want my own tooling made:

IMPORTANT USE & SAFETY INFORMATION

Pin Jaws are serious workholding tools and should be used with appropriate machining and clamping practices.

The jaws are 4140 prehard steel at approximately RC 28-32, while the hardened pins are approximately RC 60.

Excessive clamping force can potentially damage the pin holes, pins, or the workpiece.

Use appropriate clamping pressure for the part being held, verify that the workpiece is secure before machining, and always use proper machine-shop safety practices.
